Baptist Church Damaged in Iraq Explosion

On January 26, 2010, First Baptist Church of Baghdad in Iraq, which is home to a kindergarten school supported by The Sharing Way, was damaged by an explosion less than half a kilometre away. The pastor, workers and children at the school were not physically harmed, but the building suffered serious damage.

The incident occurred after a suicide bomber drove an 18-wheel truck with explosives into a crowded intersection, killing several bystanders.

“This is the reality of what they, our brothers and sisters in Christ, and the whole Iraqi people, face daily," said Tony Peck, BWA regional secretary for Europe and general secretary of the EBF. "We are praying for peace and the ending of the violence in Iraq, but also for the clear and courageous witness of Christian believers in these troubled times."

In 1970, five to six percent of Iraq's population were Christians. This number is now below one percent, and shrinking fast in the face of persecution and ethnic/religious cleansing. First Baptist Church of Baghdad, however, is growing and reaching out to those in need. The kindergarten school is one of these outreach projects, along with ministry work in the north of Iraq.

First Baptist Church of Baghdad is a congregation belonging to a small group, the Baptist Church of Baghdad, which is affiliated with the European Baptist Federation (EBF). The EBF is one of six regional fellowships of the Baptist World Alliance (BWA).
